Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/27/2021
Setting the sports world on fire with his arrival in the fastest league in the world, Wayne Gretzky would first don an NHL sweater in the fall of 1979, and would instantly begin to rewrite the record books. The Great One would register the highest points total ever for any first-year player with 137 – a record still held, with the blow of his loss of the Art Ross Trophy to Marcel Dionne lessened by the winning of the Hart Memorial and Lady Byng Trophies. Some of the best lumber we have recently handled, this stick was used by the one and only Gretzky during his NHL rookie campaign in 1979-80, and according to Shawn Chaulk, the stick would have been employed sometime shortly after Christmas. A Titan TPM model with “99” handwritten but faded in red over the upper and lower shaft, “W. Gretzky” is stamped but also faded midway down the shaft. The original white-now-darkened tape on the handle is intact, with a few strand of the original black tape missing on the blade – with the outline visible. Sporting custom-shaved edges, “WG” has also been handwritten in pencil on the underside at the heel. Heavy wear covers the stick from top to bottom, with wear to the graphics and numerous marks throughout. There is also what appears to be a few subtle cracks at the heel – possibly occurring from age, with some chipping and material loss at the bottom of the blade near the heel and at the toe. This paramount Gretzky weapon will dominate any advanced collection. An LOA from Shawn Chaulk will accompany.
