The seventh-highest scoring Russian in NHL history, Ilya Kovalchuk was selected 1st overall by Atlanta in 2001 and spent eight seasons with the club before being traded to New Jersey in 2010. This lot offers a trio of Kovalchuk items from his time in Georgia, with a signed helmet worn early in the 2006-07 season, signed gloves worn in 2005-06, and a stick that saw action in Kovalchuk’s competent hands circa 2005-06. First, the helmet is a Bauer model with intact visor, with Thrashers decals over each side and “17” on the lower reverse. Next, the gloves are Bauer Vapor models in royal blue with “Kovalchuk” embroidered to each, followed by the Innovative 100 Graphite model stick that features “I. Kovalchuk” factory graphics, with the original white tape over the blade and black over the handle. Hailing from the personal collection of an important hockey executive, his signed LOA will accompany.
The helmet shows nice game-use with numerous scratches and surface abrasions visible. There is some padding missing, with a minor crack on the left side, with the helmet stamped under padding "aout 200??" (August 200? - can't see the last number of "200?"). We should note that Kovalchuk only wore this model of helmet with these specific Thrashers decals for a short time early in the 2006-07 NHL season. Kovalchuk signed over the top section, with some loss to the signature from handling. The gloves sport a handwritten “1” to each and show light to moderate use with nice wear to the palms, with Kovalchuk signing each in white. Lastly, the stick exhibits a factory code on the underside and shows light game use, with puck marks and wear to the taped section of blade.
