Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2020
Achieving their greatest success during the infancy of the 20th century, winning multiple Stanley Cup championships during the first decade, the Ottawa Senators first battled in winter carnival tournaments during the 1880s before helping found the AHAC. The club was also founding members in both the NHA and NHL. Numerous legendary players have represented the Sens before the club relocated to St Louis in 1934. This lot contains an especially rare collection of early Senators player photos totaling 10, ranging from the mid-1920s to mid-1930s. Included, we have matching-style portrait bust photos from circa 1923-25 for HOFers Punch Broadbent, Alec Connell and Hooley Smith, along with Joe Ironstone and Earl Campbell, followed by 4 circa mid-to-late-1920s photos for Broadbent (Worlds Champs 1926-27 sweater), Frank Finnigan (2 different) and one other. The final image is a circa 1933-34 photo of netminder Bill Beveridge (image used for his 1933-34 O-Pee-Chee, Ice Kings and V129 cards).
The circa 1923-25 matching style portrait photos (4” x 6”) are dated by the inclusion of both Ironstone and Broadbent (Ironstone only played as a backup goaltender with the Sens in 1924-25 according to information online, while Broadbent’s final season with Ottawa was in 1923-24, before returning in 1927-28). The Connell has an embossed stamp from photographer Pittaway, with each photo having pencil notations over the reverse. The group exhibits just moderate surface and edge wear along with toning. The additional mid-to-late-1920s photos (4” x 6”) all sport minor creases, with notations over the reverse of each, with the Broadbent and one of the Finnigan photos having a stamp from Hands Studio in Ottawa. The final image of Beveridge (5” x 7”) has pinholes, toning and a single crease, with notations over the reverse including a stamp from the “Ottawa Hockey Association Limited”.
