Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

A valuable member of the Quebec Aces followed by the Shawinigan Cataracts, Jean-Guy Talbot spent his first full season with the Montreal Canadiens in 1955-56, and would help lead the Habs with his physical style of play to five consecutive Stanley Cup championships. Hailing from the fifth and final title of the Canadiens unmatched dynasty, we have a stick used by the Cap-de-la-Madeleine native, and it’s been team-signed by the 1959-60 Montreal Canadiens. A CCM Pattern Made Professional model, “Talbot” and “17” appear stamped over the upper shaft, with the original black tape intact on the blade and knob (a few strands are missing from the blade, with others loose). Approx 20 have signed one side of the shaft in matching ballpoint including Talbot, along with deceased HOFers Plante, Richard, Beliveau, Geoffrion, Moore, Johnson, Harvey, Blake and the Rocket.
The additional signers include Bonin, Provost, Goyette, Marshall, Pronovost, Backstrom, Langlois, Hicke and Bob Turner. The signatures have been covered with a thin layer of shellac, with the majority including the Plante, Harvey and Rocket displaying well, with a bit of loss due to the writing instrument with the Beliveau signature. The stick itself shows heavy game use with numerous puck and stick marks covering the lower sections, with a few cracks to the blade and wear to the underside. There is also some red paint transfer over the shaft, with the original striping accent gone. Dated by the inclusion of both Bill Hicke and Maurice Richard, 1959-60 was the final NHL season for the Rocket, while Hicke was in his first year with the Habs that season. We should further note that Hicke did play one playoff game with Montreal in 1958-59, so the possibility exists that the stick originates from that single contest.
