Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

Infamous in the hockey world and widely remembered as symbolic to the French and English rivalry occurring contemporaneously in Quebec, the Maurice Richard Riot began with a high stick to The Rocket’s head by Bruins Hal Laycoe in a March 13, 1955 contest in Boston. Richard retaliated before linesman Cliff Thompson made the mistake of trying to subdue Richard and was struck twice. NHL President Clarence Campbell suspended Richard for the remainder of the 1954-55 season, and with this too much for the Montreal hopefuls to bear, the Richard Riot ensued outside the Forum, on March 17. This Canadiens jersey pays tribute to the noteworthy event, and contains the signatures off all three principal parties involved, including the Rocket, Clarence Campbell and Hal Laycoe. A CCM “Vintage” model with tackle twill team crest and felt numbers, all three signatures have been placed on leather swatches, with each sewn directly into the reverse “9”. A hologram has been affixed, with a matching LOA to accompany.
The signatures display well (Richard in blue ink, Laycoe in black ink and Campbell in green), with this unique display piece ideal to represent one of the most infamous moments in NHL history. Richard passed away in 2000, Laycoe in 1998 and Campbell in 1984.
