Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
Legendary as the first recipient of both the Hart and Lady Byng Trophies, Frank Nighbor began his rise to stardom with the PCHL’s Vancouver Millionaires before spending 15 seasons with the Ottawa Senators. The 1947 HOF inductee would conclude his noteworthy career with a single game played for the Buffalo Bisons – a team he would later coach. We have the contract from Nighbor’s time with the Bisons. A Standard Player’s Contract at 8 ½” x 14” (unfolded), the agreement for the 1931-32 IHL season called for Nighbor to earn $4,000.00, with an additional $1,000.00 paid by the Bisons' parent company, "Fort Erie Artificial Ice Co.", to release the superstar from the ownership of Maple Leaf Gardens. Nighbor has signed in black fountain pen, with the signature remaining dark and bold, with no intrusions from other signatures.
Showing its age with heavy wear throughout, the contract exhibits considerable toning and pronounced fold lines with small edge tears. There is also some corner and edge wear, with the document in need of a quality framing.
