Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
Logging the most minutes in conference play of any goaltender in the WCHA as a freshman in 2009-10, Joe Howe would spend four seasons with the Colorado College Tigers, leading the club to the WCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament final during his senior season, in 2012-13. This mask was worn by the star netminder during the 2012-13 season and in the WCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament semifinals vs Minnesota (won by Colorado 2-0 to advance to the final), on March 22, 2013, with the mask likely worn the previous season as well, in 2011-12. A Shark 954 model with intact cage, back plate, strapping, and interior padding, “Howe” appears across the chin section in Tigers’ colours, with “CC” over the forehead. A small Head Strong Grafx decal has been added near the right ear (clear-coated over), with “Shark 954” over both sides of the interior along with “J. Howe” handwritten. A photo of Howe in game action wearing this mask will accompany which is photo-matched to a numeric image to the paint chipping and chip on the chin.
The mask exhibits considerable use with heavy chipping to the surface over the chin and forehead sections, with additional chipping in a number of spots. The back plate padding is also detached, with a piece of nylon fishing line placed across the reverse, ear to ear for display purposes. There is also some rusting to the interior clasps. We should also note that the current cage affixed differs from the example in the accompanying photo and the photo-match image, with the screws at each far end of the cage not properly mounted/flush. A Warwick carrying/storage bag is also included.
