Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

A member of Team USA at the 1977 IIHF World Championships, Warren “Butch” Williams skated for parts of two seasons in sunny California with the Golden Seals, preceded by 31 games with the St Louis Blues, in 1973-74. The Minnesota native would also star in the CHL with both Salt Lake and Denver. This scarce Spurs jersey was worn by Williams in 1972-73, where he appeared in 13 games. Giesler-Jorgen tagging is affixed to the collar, with the vintage durene sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 52. Styled with a mulit-coloured tackle twill team crest with embroidered detailing, “12” appears over the sleeves and verso in matching material, with no nameplate over the upper reverse. We should note that the Giesler-Jorgen labeling dates the sweater to the early-to-mid-1970s. Photographic evidence shows that the Spurs started to wear two colour numbers in 1971-72, but with no nameplate. In 1972-73, they started wearing thin nameplates (like the outlines visible of the two former nameplates), with 25th anniversary patches on the shoulders (outlines visible).
We should further note that photographic evidence shows Butch Williams wearing the #12 jersey in 1972-73 and interestingly enough, photographic evidence also shows coach/player Bob McCord wearing a #12 jersey in 1973-74. With the 25th patches on the shoulders and due to the pair of former nameplates visible, the jersey is attributed to have been worn by these two players. Exhibiting especially heavy game-use, the garment sports numerous dark marks throughout, with light pilling visible in a few areas. There are also team repairs on the front (1) and reverse (3).
