Earning his “Happy” moniker with the routinely sour look on his face, Leighton Hap Emms spent over a decade in the NHL, dressing for four different clubs, and would later found and own the OHA’s Barrie Flyers and serve as head coach from 1945 to 1960. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a vintage signed photo of Emms in his New York Americans uniform team-signed by members of the early-1950s Flyers, a Joe Lamb signed Americans photo, and an additional seven vintage photos of Amerks players. All in the 8” x 10” range give or take, the Emms photo has been signed by 15 in varying inks including Hap, with the Lamb photo signed in fountain pen with a personalization to Hamlyn. The additional Amerks photos include Shields, Gallagher, Jackson, Doran, Farrant, Kalbfleisch and Eddie Burke (most of the images are from noted photographer Turofsky).
A number of the signatures on the Emms photo have been gone over by the original signers, with no issues for the Emms signature. The signers include Don Cherry (traced over), Donald Nash, Jim Robertson, Jack Spencer, Ed MacQueen, Arnold Smith, Butch Graham, Bob White and others. Two of the additional photos also show heavier wear with paper affixed to the reverse (Burke and Gallagher).
