Earning his befitting nickname with his blazing speed, Harold “Bullet Joe” Simpson rose to prominence as a member of the Allan Cup-champion Winnipeg 61st Battalion military hockey team in 1916. The talented defenceman would sign with the Big 4’s Edmonton Eskimos in 1920 and spend six seasons in Alberta before his contract was purchased by the New York Americans at the conclusion of the 1924-25 season. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a 1933-34 New York Americans team photo and scrapbook page both signed by the 1963 HOF inductee. At 6 ¾” x 9”, with both items autographed in blue ballpoint, the team photo has been signed on the reverse, with the large scripting flawless, while the 8” x 10” scrapbook page that also features the Americans has been signed over the bottom left. Simpson would reach the age of 80, passing on Boxing Day in 1973.
The photo exhibits heavy creasing and toning, with a few stains on the reverse along with typed text. The scrapbook page pictures the Americans in 1927-28 including Simpson, with handwritten notes on the reverse that have been crossed out.
