Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
Two encapsulated examples for a 1923-24 William Paterson V145-1 set, a Hamilton Tigers collection or a rookie card stash are offered here, with card #36 picturing Jesse Spring graded VG+ 3.5 by PSA and joined by a VG 3 card of 37-Eddie Bouchard. They're not near the top of their respective lines on the PSA Population Report but the latter is an indication of the scarcity of V145-1 cards, with just 36 of the Spring card and 32 Bouchards submitted to PSA since the company's inception. Spring's story is a fascinating one; he collapsed and died in Toronto at just 43 after an incredible career as an all-around athlete. The defenceman played in the NHL from 1923-24 to '39-40, was a middle wing with the Toronto Argonauts football team and was Canada's amateur heavyweight boxing champion at one point. He was also remembered as a great lacrosse and baseball player. Bouchard meanwhile was a Quebecer who started his big league career as a winger with the Montreal Canadiens before seeing time with Hamilton, the New York Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates. Both cards here, as alluded to at the top, are indeed rookie cards.
