Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
Remembered as being one of hockey's best clutch/"money" goaltenders was Walter "Turk" Broda, with the Brandon, Manitoba native appearing here as a 23-year old and following his first NHL season. Conn Smythe bought Broda from the Detroit Olympics after seeing him star in the International Hockey League in 1935-36. The first NHL goalie to play 100 playoff games, Broda helped the Maple Leafs to five Stanley Cup titles, including three straight in the late-1940s. The first card in O-Pee-Chee's 48-card set of 1937-38 (card numbers continued from the previous seasons) and edged only by Toe Blake's RC in terms of importance/value is the Broda, with this example of card #133 graded EX 5 by PSA. It's a Pop 7 with just six others edging it at PSA, with 40 total submissions to the firm over the years. A terrific acquisition this one will be. Light scratches to the holder itself are to note.
