We’ll see how you feel about the heaps of opportunities that this abundance of O-Pee-Chee cards offers, with Wayne and Mario rookie cards highlighting it. One Gretzky RC is graded 7.5 NM+ by KSA, with the accompanying cards quite nice; EX-MT or better are the majority, while the other is weaker, with a (raw) VG-EX Gretzky off-centered with a slight diamond cut. The Lemieux RC is EX-MT with the set averaging similar. Sets from the 1970s include 1974-75, ’76-77 and ’77-78, with a near set (missing 26) from ’75-76. As is often typical, the ‘70s grade lower than the ‘80s entries. Four ’80-81 sets (Messier, Bourque), two from ’81-82 (Coffey, Kurri++), four ’82-83s (Fuhr, Francis, Hawerchuk), an ’83-84, an ’84-85 (Yzerman, Gilmour++), a near ’84-85 set, sets from ’86-87 (Roy), ’87-88 and ’88-89 (2)(Hull) and an ’84-85 Topps set complete the lineup and feature numerous interesting rookie cards, along with dozens of Gretzkys. Duplicates and quantity can be a good thing(!), with the condition lowdown and more images available on our website.
As alluded to, representatives from the 1970s show moderate handling and wear, with VG and VG-EX sets to be expected, but with EX Don Cherry and Denis Potvin RCs to mention. One of four ’80-81 sets, with Messier and Bourque rookies and second-year Gretzky cards, stands above the others, with EX-MT and NM-or better examples dominating. A second is close but with a weak Messier while a decent and a not so nice assembly are also present. The two sets from ’81-82 include a better (EX-MT and NM cards being the majority) and a lesser, with three from ’82-83 exhibiting just light handling/wear and a fourth missing three cards. An ’83-84 set mentioned above is actually missing one card; a Gretzky League Leader. Near mint RCs of Yzerman and Gilmour (OC) are notable from ’84-85, while the two keys are missing from a near set. A Patrick Roy rookie is but VG, with its accompanying set showing handling. To summarize, there are no sets that we consider to be high grade, although high grade cards are present. It’s just that most groups, even the nicest, have intermittent cards with corner dings or flaws. Nevertheless, there is substantial break-up value awaiting an entrepreneurial hobbyist – what an instant/additional inventory, with two Waynes and a Mario leading the way!
