Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
From the height of the Great Depression, we have a spectacular vintage one-piece stick that has been team-signed by members of the 1933-34 Montreal Canadiens. The “Oct. 31st 1933” added at the top of the shaft reveals the exact date of the signatures, with an especially large and bold “Howie” Morenz autograph further elevating the treasure to epic proportions. A combination of what appear to be fountain pen and thick lead pencil signatures also include those of legendary Canadiens’ figures Newsy Lalonde, who added “Mgr”, and Leo Dandurand. Others, descending from the top, are Jack Portland, Wildor Larochelle, Sam Godin, Armand Mondou, Jack Riley, Lorne Chabot, assistant trainer Steve Davis, Sylvio Mantha, trainer Ed Dufour, Aurel Joliat (clubhouse signature done in printed letters), Johnny Gagnon, Pete Lepine, Jerry Carson, Paul-Marcel Raymond, Art Alexandre (smudged and barely decipherable), Geo. Mantha and Leo Bourgault.
A scripted “Hand Made Special” and “Jos. Choquette Sports – 1439 City Hall Ave. – Ave. Hotel de Ville – Montreal" stamp are clearly visible on one side of the blade, with similar faded stamping on the other side of the solid, like-new blade. The majority of the signatures display well, with light wear to the 54” stick, including a few small areas of minor discolouration.
