Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Scarce pre-war collectibles feature well-known poses of some of the era’s top stars, with collectors/gum chewers back in the day having to save 50(!) “Ice King” wrappers and one premium wrapper to be able to send away for one of the big 7” by 9” premium cards, printed on thick card stock. Hockey immortal Howie Morenz leads the lineup, with a semi-circular crease descending from the top edge to attain the icon’s hair, 1-1/2" diagonal creases in the lower corners, corner/edge wear and small edge stains all to mention. An attractive crease-free Aurele Joliat example is the condition leader at EX or very close to it, while Toronto legend Hap Day’s displays a notch better than teammate King Clancy, the latter with some surface scuffs and a light corner crease. Pictures of Hooley Smith (age toning/spots (front) and light back damage) and Allan Shields (minor soiling on the reverse) are also, like the Leafs, in the VG neighborhhood, with two lower grade duplicates of Day also present and more details on our website. A terrific chance to score desirable pre-war scarcities like these is a very infrequent occurrence.
The aforementioned light back damage to the Hooley Smith picture is in the form of "lines" of light paper loss, produced when photos are removed from the photo albums which first appeared in the 1970s and which featured sticky "lines" to hold pictures in place under a clear plastic sheet that could be peeled and then cover the photos – remember those? As for the two extra Hap Day pieces, one is affected by moisture damage and a scrape in the upper right corner, while the other has two pinholes (upper left border) and four pieces of scotch tape at the four corners on the reverse.
