Captaining the Toledo Goaldiggers to a Turner Cup championship in 1982, Mike Greeder had previously won a National Championship while attending the University of Minnesota, in 1978-79. We have a Golden Gophers jersey worn by Greeder in 1978-79, and according to our consignor, was worn in the 1979 championship game that witnessed Minnesota defeat North Dakota, 4-3. Steichens and Rawlings (partially detached) labels with “48” sizing are affixed to the collar, with the vintage sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 56. Styled with the school’s trademark large “M” over the chest in layered white and gold tackle twill, “28” appears over the sleeves and verso in matching material, with no nameplate present on the garment.
A few large stick marks are present over the lower front including over the team crest, with board burns over each sleeve and a bit of red paint transfer over the right elbow. Team repairs are also present, with examples over the lower front and left sleeve. Coached by Herb Brooks and compiling a 32–11–1 record in 1978-79, over half a dozen players from Minnesota’s roster would play for Team USA and be a part of the historic “Miracle on Ice” squad that shocked the world at the 1980 Winter Olympics.
