The team’s top scorer while leading the University of Minnesota to a pair of conference championships in the early-1950s, Bob Johnson played for his hometown Golden Gophers for two seasons, seeing action under the watchful eye of legendary Minnesotan and fellow Hall of Fame member Johnny Mariucci. We have a Golden Gophers team jacket and sweater attributed to use by Johnson during his tenure with the school, in 1952-53 and 1953-54. The heavy-knit sweater with missing label is in solid maroon, with the university’s trademark “M” over the chest in thick gold felt. The jacket feature’s a label from Corrie’s, with the school’s trademark “M” again appearing over the left breast in gold chenille with gold felt trim. Worn by a legendary HOF coach during his formative hockey years, the jacket and sweater would look stunning displayed together.
The sweater measures-out to roughly a size 40, with wear on and beneath the team crest, with some minor loose threading along the waist band. There is also the remnants of a label over the inside seam that appears to have another player’s name. The jacket is approx a size 48, with all of the clasps intact and just some minor discolouration to the lining. There is also some surface wear present to the jacket, including over the buttons and crest.
