Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Seeing playoff action near the end of his iconic and legendary career, we have a signed stick used by the mighty Wayne Gretzky during Game 4 of the first round of the 1996 Stanley Cup playoffs, played on April 23, with Wayne’s St Louis Blues defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs in the series, 4-2. An Easton Aluminum model, “Gretzky” appears over the upper shaft, with this repeated on the stem of the inserted wooden Easton blade. The original Gripper is intact on the handle, with the blade tape removed (remnants are visible) to facilitate the large and now somewhat faded/worn Gretzky black marker signature. A code of "Tor P-14" has also been written over the knob, with this to signify the 14th stick used in the playoffs vs Toronto. An LOA will accompany this important Wayne Gretzky stick.
The stick shows light use, with some wear to the blade along with blue paint transfer over the lower shaft, which, according to the accompanying LOA, is present from contact with Doug Gilmour’s stick during faceoffs. There are also some light traces of red paint transfer along edges of the shaft.
