Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019

A charter member of the National League in 1876, the Philadelphia Athletics won back-to-back World Series titles in 1910 and 1911, with the latter series giving Frank “Home Run” Baker his sobriquet after the star blasted a two-run homer off Rube Marquard in Game 2. Celebrating the 1911 Fall Classic and a staple for advanced Dead Ball-era A’s collectors - along with the rare Leeds Connie Mack ribbon, we have a ceramic plate featuring the 1911 “Worlds Champions”. At 10" in diameter and utilizing the elephant mascot after Giants skipper John McGraw famously told reporters that principal owner Benjamin Shibe had a "white elephant on his hands", portrait images of team members have been placed within the elephant’s image, with Mack at the helm. An iconic squad that featured a number of legendary stars including Collins, Bender and Eddie Plank, a mark from Florence Cook Pottery Co. appears over the reverse.
The image remains clean and quite dark, with no large areas of loss, with some general crazing to the plate itself. There are also a few very minor surface blemishes present, with most of the gold gilt around the rim gone.
