Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
The perpetrator of President Gerald Ford’s distinctive scar beneath his left eye that occurred in a 1934 collegiate game, Jay Berwanger was the first player drafted into the National Football League in its inaugural 1936 NFL Draft, previously earning unanimous All-America honours while at the University of Chicago. The Dubuque native was also the first recipient of the then-named Downtown Athletic Club Trophy in 1935, soon to be re-named the Heisman Trophy the following season. We have a copy of the hardcover book The Heisman – A Symbol of Excellence, with this example signed by the legendary halfback. At 9 ½” x 11”, the 218-page volume with intact dust jacket remains complete, with Berwanger signing on the title page in ballpoint, adding “To Bob, Best Wishes”. The signature displays especially well, with moderate wear to the dust jacket. A Basic Certification from JSA will accompany.
