Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Arguably claimants to the historic status of being the world’s first hockey club, Montreal’s McGill University’s inaugural match – albeit unofficial - occurred in 1875 at the legendary Victoria Skating rink, with the team founded as The Redmen and rules codified two years later. Featuring the iconic team, we have an exceedingly rare stereoview card, issued in 1909 by the Keystone View Company. At the standard 3 ½” x 7”, imprinted text from the company has been placed over the left and right borders, with a description of the mounted photos placed on the lower right, including the misspelt "Magill". Depicting game-action complete with wire-less nets, shin-height boards and a large horde of spectators, the stereoview card remains in stunning near mint to mint condition. Keystone issued a set of McGill stereoview cards - with the complete number unknown, with this only the second time we’ve ever seen any example(s).
