Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Rarely seen and highly collectible, we have an 1890s hockey team cabinet photo, and it’s accompanied by a National Hockey Monument sculpture by St Jacobs, Ontario, artist Timothy Schmalz. The cabinet mount is 4 ¼” x 6 ½”, with the photo approx 4” x 5 ½”, with most of the photographer listed, with a fairly large section of the upper right corner torn away. A full team of seven including rover are pictured, with the members listed on the verso in pencil. A date of “1894” has also been handwritten in pencil, with both the style of cabinet and player’s equipment/uniforms matching the time frame. At approx 11 ½” in height along with a 4” x 9” base, a large detailed maple leaf is featured, along with numerous carved players. Apparently made to raise funds for the building of a full size monument, only 200 of these statuettes were produced according to our consignor, with “National Hockey Monument" engraved over the front base. “T. Schmalz” and “2007” appear over the lower reverse, with handwritten text in marker on the top of the base along the front section. With light to moderate wear to the base including along edges, the sculpture remains in excellent condition.
