Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Fascinating, alluring and riveting are William Paterson V145-1 hockey cards, with the issue's history, its incredible lineup and the haunting images all contributing to the mystique and desirability. Hobbyists with experience are aware that cards could be collected and exchanged (a full 40-card set) for a pair of hockey skates, with the card of Bert Corbeau short-printed so as to lessen the number of prize redemptions. The Corbeau example is not present here, nor are any punch holes in the cards. Redeemed cards can also be found with a date and "Cancelled" stamped on the back but none of the offered cards are so affected. Remarkably, close to half of the cards (19) in the set picture men who would go on to be enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame, with a dozen of them considered rookie cards. One of the most important rookie cards of any era, that featuring icon Howie Morenz, leads in terms of importance/value, followed by King Clancy's RC. They, along with the majority of this assembly, are attractive low grade examples. Common characteristics are rounded or slightly rounded corners and minor soiling, with however very few obvious/heavy creases observed. The Hall of Fame RC contingent also includes Frank Nighbor, Cy Denneny, George Boucher, Sylvio Mantha, Aurele Joliat, Babe Dye, Jack Adams, Reg Noble, Shorty Green and Billy Burch - amazing. All-time great Georges Vezina leads the non-RC group, with fellow HOFers Darragh, Benedict, Broadbent, Cleghorn and the legendary Joe Malone also present. As is often typical, the first (1-Gerard (paper loss, writing)) and last (40-C. Denneny RC (trimmed)) cards show heavier handling/wear and are Poor. The Joliat, John Ross Roach and Red Green cards are the notables with a crease, while seven others are affected by moisture stains. Please see our website for further details - this is one special opportunity.
With the aforementioned moisture stains and more obvious are 2-Nighbor RC and 33-Reise RC, while to a lesser extent are examples picturing 4-Darragh, 9-Broadbent, 10-Cy Denneny RC, 21-Andrews RC and Morenz, with the latter having a light stain in the lower right corner region. From a season that would see Morenz, Joliat and Vezina lead the Montreal Canadiens to the club's second(!) Stanley Cup championship in a four-team NHL, (the Habs actually had to beat the Western Canada Hockey League champion Calgary Tigers after taking out the NHL regular season champion Ottawa Senators in the league finals), these scarce treasures are indeed thought-provoking and special collectibles.
