Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Exceptional early 20th century photo (11” x 15”) pictures the "Montreal Hockey Club", with "Champions of the World 1901-02" below the team name on the sturdy cardboard mount (22” x 28”), which also identifies each of Montreal's hockey heroes. Most notable are team captain Dickie Boon, fellow Hall-of-Famer Jack Marshall and Art Hooper. The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association's team posed in studio after challenging and defeating the Winnipeg Victorias in a close best-of-three series played in mid-March. Surrounded by the affixed players list and images of the team's championship trophies including the Stanley Cup (with some paper loss), the display most likely served as a master photograph - making it an especially rare, one-of-a-kind specimen - and would have been used by the photographer to snap smaller cabinet photo images.
Very minor soiling is present, limited mostly to the mount, along with light staining, with a small area of the bottom right corner of the mount broken off. These issues detract very little though from this wondrous, mesmerizing and rare offering which remains in beautiful, displayable condition overall.
