Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
A two-time Stanley Cup champion who excelled at the professional level at a number of sports including football, baseball, lacrosse, wrestling and boxing, Lionel Conacher also threw his hat into the political sphere after his athletic days, with election to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1937 and the House of Commons in 1949. Hailing from the 1948 Ontario general election where The Big Train ran as a Liberal in the St Patrick Riding and finished 3rd in the running, we have a voting advertising card/ink blotter. At 3 ¼” x 6” and picturing Conacher in his football uniform punting and using the tag line “I PLAYED for you… NOW let me WORK for you!”, “Vote Conacher” is listed along the base of the pink-backed, thin stock card. With toning and a bit of surface wear, the card appears to have been folded vertically at one time, with some creasing that runs from top to bottom. Despite this, the card displays well, and it’s the first example we have ever handled.
