Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Popular on the East Coast throughout the 1880s/90s and especially favoured in New England, roller hockey/polo featured the metal-wheeled skates of the day, with polo or field hockey sticks used along with a hard ball. We have a Victorian cabinet photo of a circa-1890 roller hockey/polo team. At 3 ¾” x 5 ½”, the sepia-tone image features a team of five, complete with curved sticks, cricket pads and striped sweaters with large “W” team logos. Affixed to a slightly larger beige mount at 4 ¼” x 6 ½”, the photographer “Leopold” is listed beneath, along with his 831 Chapel Street address in New Haven Connecticut. Exhibiting surface wear along with a crease and a few blemishes, the photo displays well, with just light wear to the front and reverse of the mount.
