Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Originally called up to the Boston Bruins to replace Terry Sawchuk midway through the 1956-57 season, Don Simmons would witness action in parts of five seasons in Beantown, playing the majority of the club’s games in both 1957-58 and 1958-59. Attributed to his time in Boston during the late-1950s and hailing from his personal collection, we have a pair of skates along with a glove used by Don Simmons. The glove is actually a Wilson “Ripper” Collins signature model baseman’s mitt, custom designed with added extended leather cuff by noted Somerville Massachusetts supplier Jim McCarthy, with both “Wilson” and “Jim McCarthy” labels. The skates are CCM professional models with intact laces, with “Simmons” labels added to the base of each boot (one label is partially torn away). An LOA from the Simmons family will accompany.
The glove shows great use, with all strapping intact and the leather still supple. A photo of Simmons during his time with the Bruins shows the netminder wearing a similar Wilson glove, with both the Wilson and McCarthy labels visible, but differently placed. The skates show heavy use, with considerable wear to the guards including numerous cuts and scrapes, with additional wear to the blades including minor discolouration along the bases. We should also note the possibility exists of Simmons using the skates and glove prior or after his time with Boston, while with Springfield or another team, or with Boston and another team.
