Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
From his days of searching antique stores and flea markets, we have a large collection of antique skates totaling 20 pairs, with each found by and hailing from the personal collection of superstar netminder Don Simmons. With the majority originating from the late-1800s/early-1900s, we have 9 pairs with wooden bases, 4 all steel pairs with leather accessories, 6 just steel pairs and 1 pair of modern-style boot and blade skates. The oldest pair appears to hail from circa-1880, with curled blade tips and wooden bases, with both rope and leather strapping intact. A number also have engraved maker marks, including from Winslow, Starr, Union Hardware, Falcon, CCM and others companies. An LOA from the Simmons family will accompany.
Highlights in the collection include the pair with boots, with these circa-1910 skates having Union Hardware blades along with “Potter’s” hockey boots, with heavy use exhibited, with this followed by a pair of children’s skates with wooden bases and colourful “Falcon” decals, a pair of circa-1880s skates with the wooden bases retaining some of the original dark green finish, a pair of snow shoe-type clamp skates and a pair of “Racing” skates with especially long blades and wooden bases produced by Union Hardware. The majority of the skates in the collection show moderate to heavier wear from both their age and former use, with some of the blades rusty and some of the hardware and accessories brittle.
