Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Despite only a third-place regular-season finish behind Chicago and Montreal, the Toronto Maple Leafs would take out the Canadiens in seven during the 1963-64 postseason, with the Leafs forcing seven games during the finals against Gordie Howe and the boys from Motor City, shutting out Detroit in the final game to earn their third consecutive Stanley Cup championship. Netminder Don Simmons would see action in thirty percent of the Leafs contests in 1963-64, with this his final season in Ontario. Presented to Mr. Simmons for his status as a Stanley Cup champion in 1964 with Toronto, we have an elegant tray from his personal collection. At just over 14 ½” in diameter at the widest points, a beautiful embossed floral design graces the perimeter, with an intricate engraved pattern over the surface. Centralized text in attractive script includes “National Hockey League – Stanley Cup Winners – 1963-64 – Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club – Donald Simmons”. An “Old English Reproduction” logo is stamped over the reverse, along with “Ep On Copper” and “Made in Canada”, with a production number of “2658”. An LOA from the Simmons family will accompany.
Considerable oxidation is visible over the centralized portion with the engraved text, with a few dark streaks present along with additional minor discolouration over the right side. There is also some additional surface wear over the reverse, with some oxidation/discolouration along the outer edges.
