Performing especially well for the enthusiastic masses at Maple Leaf Gardens, the Toronto Maple Leafs would lose only 7 of the 35 games played at home during the 1963-64 NHL season, with the club’s eventual 78 points enough to garner a third spot finish. Dave Keon would lead the Blue and White in points with 60, while Johnny Bower would appear in 51 contests, with Don Simmons tending the Leafs net for parts of 21 games, contributing largely to Toronto's success. Andy Bathgate would make his debut in a Leafs sweater this season, with the Rangers dealing the future Hall of Fame member shortly before the postseason begun. The club’s first playoff victim would be the always favoured Montreal Canadiens, with the series going the full seven games, with the finals seeing a rematch of the previous season, with Toronto again victorious, shutting out Gordie Howe and the Motor City squad in the pivotal Game 7 to claim the team’s third consecutive Stanley Cup championship, and twelfth in franchise history.
Presented to star netminder Don Simmons and hailing from his personal collection, we have his 1964 Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup championship 10K gold and diamond ring. Size 10 with an approx weight of 19 grams, an embedded silver maple leaf sits centered on the tableau, with a large and stunning inserted bezel-set diamond, with “Stanley Cup Champions” in raised letters encompassing. The right shank feature’s a raised image of Lord Stanley’s grail with a pair of leaves placed on either side above, while the left shank has “Toronto” centralized, with “62-63-64” stacked beneath, and leaves again placed above. The inner band contains a “Birks 10K” stamping, with “Don Simmons” engraved in elegant script. Surviving the last half century beautifully and devoid of any harsh and unsightly heavily worn or rubbed areas, the ring exhibits just light to moderate wear throughout, with expected scratches on the inner and outer band, with additional wear over the keepsake’s edges. Presented to an important three-time Stanley Cup champion, this attractive ring will appeal to those discerning collectors who covet only the finest hockey memorabilia extant. An LOA from the Simmons family will accompany this Stanley Cup treasure, and please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
