Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019

Second on the all-time goal list behind a player by the name of Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe appeared in twenty-three NHL All-Star Games, with his impressive six Hart Memorial trophies as the league’s most valuable player won over the span of a dozen seasons. From the height of his career during the glorious Original Six era, we have a pair of gloves worn by the iconic legend. Originally gifted to Maple Leaf Gardens’ maintenance employee Charles Hufnagel who worked at the venue from 1946 until 1962, an accompanying letter of provenance from Charles’ wife specifies that the gloves were given directly to her husband from Mr Hockey after a Leafs and Red Wings tilt, and they’ve remained in her family ever since. Stall & Dean Puckmaster models with remnants of the original ink stamp over the front section of the right glove’s wrist guard, photographic evidence shows Gordie wearing this model of glove circa 1956-58. Seeing plenty of Motor City action, the heavily worn gloves witnessed use after Mr Howe, but nevertheless remain an especially rare and significant find.
As mentioned, the gloves show very heavy wear with considerable rubbing to the leather on both gloves throughout, with large separations from missing threading, most notably along the sides of both palms, with the entire section of threading gone from the tip of the pinkie finger to the bottom of the cuff on the right glove. There are also some tears with the padding/material visible beneath, with numerous large holes over the palm on the left glove. Any and all items worn by hockey’s all-time greatest legend command instant respect, and distance themselves from the multitude of specimens donned by mere mortal players.
