Rejected by Larry MacPhail for a final time while seeking meaningful employment with the New York Yankees in 1946, things only got worse for Babe Ruth throughout the year, as the iconic slugger was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant tumor at the base of his skull and in his neck. While in poor shape and attempting to recover in Florida, commissioner Happy Chandler proclaimed April 27, 1947, Babe Ruth Day around the major leagues, with the most significant observance to be at Yankee Stadium. Dated a mere four days before this second-last visit to hallowed Yankee Stadium, we have a Western Union telegram addressed to Ruth at the house he built, dated April 23, 1947, with this a request for an appearance at an opening day ceremony in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sent by fellow MLB player and 1935 American League batting champion “Buddy” Myer, he implores Ruth that “As a personal favor to me would appreciate your making every effort to come down here for opening day”, also stating that “we have a wonderful bunch of boys” and “your presence would mean so much to them”. The 8” x 10” telegram exhibits expected toning, with a few creases and edge tears, along with a small area of paper loss within the upper left corner.
