Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
A swell array of vintage goodies to tell you about here, with pictures on cardboard stock available through Quaker Oats in 1938-39 and featuring Toronto Maple Leafs subjects, a good place to start. Ten of fifteen Leafs are present, along with famous announcer Foster Hewitt, with Apps, Broda, Drillon and Horner comprising the Hall of Fame contingent and the lineup completed by Boll, Chamberlain, Davidson, Fowler, Kampman and Nick Metz. Most have rather pleasing VG to VG-EX appearances, with Kampman and Metz lesser and light subtle back damage affecting Apps and Horner. .....O-Pee-Chee oversized cards from 1940-41 and with a sepia tone are also less-often-seen than some of the other items here and total 10, with card numbers being 127-Larson RC, 128-Grosso RC, 129-Douglas RC, 134-Crawford RC, 135-Benson RC, 137-Dahlstrom, 138-Bruneteau (2), 143-Hergesheimer RC and 145-Wilder RC. No unsightly creases are observed but most, (similar to the aforementioned Apps and Horner Quaker Oats pictures), have light back damage from having been removed from 1970s' photo albums which featured sticky "lines". Writing is to note on the back of 145-Wilder. .....A dozen similar 5" by 7" OPC cards from '39-40 include six decent examples, with the "lines" and small paper loss on the reverse of 59-Charlie Conacher, but not present on VG to VG-EX cards of 9-Kelly, 27-Mondou, 30-Wentworth and 63-Robertson. Six others are low grade throw-ins, including 91-Roy Conacher RC. ......Classic CCM team photos from the 1930s include six blue border jobs featuring 1935-36 squads, (Maple Leafs, Red Wings, Detroit Olympics with Turk Broda), along with an individual shot of a young Foster Hewitt, and are in the VG neighborhood with no unsightly creases/flaws, while a low grade green border '34-35 Bruins example is also present. Continuing with (similar size) team photos, three Nestor Johnson Black Hawks entries are highlighted by a color shot of the '36-37 Chicago team, while black and white pictures are from '40-41 (creased) and '41-42. An original Hawks/Nestor Johnson mailing envelope is a swell bonus. ......Completing the stash are "Crown Brand" items, with a "How to Become a Hockey Star" booklet by Tommy Gorman accompanied by five team photos and two groups of individual photos. With their identifying beige backings are the '36-37 and '37-38 Montreal Maroons, along with Canadiens teams from '37-38, '39-40 and, although with the season not identified, '35-36. Three are superior to the others for display purposes, with the '37-38 Maroons and Habs examples featuring small writing on the front and the one-time owner's name on the back. The individual photos are all without their original backings but include some fine star power. Fifty different include Morenz, Joliat, Bailey, Blake, Boucher, Barry and Worters, although their reverses and most of the others have the diagonal "lines" from the aforementioned photo albums. No lines however are detected on the backs of Morenz and Bailey in the other group which totals 25 and which includes light duplication, with doubles of Blake most noteworthy. A bonanza of vintage collectibles await the high bidder here.
