Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
A photo of a young Maurice Richard, one of Toronto's Rhys Thompson and several other more-difficult-to-locate Bee Hives, (over two dozen), highlight this alluring stash, with team totals and most notables as follows: Bruins - 9 (Boyd, J. Schmidt), Black Hawks - 14 (Johnston, LoPresti, Purpur), Red Wings - 14 (C. Brown, McReavy), Canadiens - 18 (Bibeault, Dame, Heffernan, Lach (2), Lamoureux, O'Connor, both Reardons), Maroons - 1 (Smith), Americans - 7 (Benson, Thurier, Watson), Rangers - 21 (Burns, Davidson, Franks, Garret, Kirkpatrick, Myles, Tustin, Warwick), Maple Leafs - 36 - (Carr, Copp, Dickens, Hill, Mann (script overlaps stick), McLean, Poile, Romnes, Stein), Trophies - 5 (all dated on back). A great start to a Group I collection or marvelous dealer inventory, this assembly is loaded with book value, with condition issues and more images available on our website.
The aforementioned condition issues have to do with the backs of the red, blue and beige backings, affected from once having been placed in photo albums that first made their appearance in the 1970s. They're the ones with lightly sticky "lines"; a person could peel back a clear page and place photos that would be held in place by the lines and then covered with the clear plastic. When items are removed from such albums, the backs are often left with "lines" and that's the case with the vast majority here. It looks like the collector in question applied pressure to the upper and lower edges/regions as they're the affected areas. Three small areas of paper loss on the blue backing of the Maurice Richard are to mention, along with faint lines top and bottom. Just a tad of paper loss joins the faint lines on the reverse of the Rhys Thompson example. Five of the more important photos have tears on the backs of the backings; Boston's Boyd and Schmidt, Rangers Franks and Tustin and Carr of the Leafs. Overall though, the corners (of the backings) exhibit light to moderate wear and display better than many ensembles of Group I photos that we've handled over the years. We do not spot any replacement/reproduction backings and very few re-glued photos, with a half dozen having lifted off their mats and needing to be re-affixed. The trophies meanwhil are low grade, with a pinhole or two, with handling/wear (a crease or creases) to the photos themselves. Present are images of the Byng, Calder, Hart and Vezina trophies as well as the Memorial Cup. Numerous possibilities with this intriguing lineup.
