Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
A trio of Montreal Canadiens that all witnessed action during the club’s dominance during the 1970s, we have game-used sticks from Bob Gainey, Pete Mahovlich and netminder Wayne Thomas. All Sher-Wood models with the player’s respective name and number on the upper shaft, the Gainey stick originates from his rookie era, with the original black tape in place over the blade and handle, with light use exhibited including a few marks to the lower shaft and wear to the stick’s graphics. The Mahovlich stick also sports the original white tape on the handle (the bottom strand is loose), with the blade bare, with the stick possibly used in this manner as very little tape was usually added to his blades. Lastly, the Thomas stick has the original black tape in place over the blade and white over the handle, with a "Jan 8 1975" date stamp.
For the Mahovlich, there is an “Avr 9 1975” date stamp on the underside of the shaft – denoting either playoffs use or the stick saw action the following season, with worn sections of fiberglass on the blade and puck marks to the blade and lower shaft. For the Thomas, being that he sat out the 1974-75 season, it’s possible that this stick saw either alternate use, or was employed the following season with Toronto. The blade remains solid, with tears to the tape and a loose strand. There is also additional wear to the shaft, including the graphics.
