Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Referred to by collectors as Cowan Tiles, these 6” x 6” ceramic affairs were reportedly meant to be sold at NHL arenas, but speculation is that licensing issues led to them never being released to the public, and despite most apparently being destroyed, a fairly large number have survived. Over 100 different players exist, with “SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD. – Made in Canada” appearing on the cork backing of each along with an attached grommet for hanging. “H.M. Cowan”, thought to be the artist’s name, joins the colourful images. Highlighted by 9 prominent HOF members, we have a collection of 20 tiles, dominated by the Montreal Canadiens, with 14 Habs examples present including Beliveau, Geoffrion, Richard, Harvey, Johnson, Backstrom, Provost and others, with the remaining tiles to include Bathgate, Armstrong, Howell, Pronovost and others.
The remaining tiles include Berenson, Fontinato, Gauthier, Goyette, Maniago, Horvath, Rousseau, Gilles Tremblay and JC Tremblay. Each tile remains in gorgeous original condition with very faint surface blemishes visible on a few, with each accompanied by an original box (except two), with many of the boxes having the player’s name handwritten (some erroneously), with heavy toning and dark spotting to number of the boxes. We should also note that the Marcel Pronovost box has been signed by the HOFer (just as “Marcel”), with a lengthy personalization added.
