Difficult to locate relics from just after the turn of the century, we have a collection of early hockey/ice polo sticks totaling 3, along with an oversized imperial team photo dated 1907. First, the 10” x 13” team photo feature’s a youthful club with “HBT” sweaters, with a placard stating “City Champions 1907” within the foreground. Most likely an American squad as the prevalence of outer-worn shin guards was usually a characteristic seen south of the border, a stick with “Empire” in Victorian script is visible, along with a Spalding paper label stick and Spalding puck. In gorgeous condition and exhibiting considerable silvering, the antique photo has been matted and framed to full dimensions of 18 ½” x 22 ½”. The offered sticks include a single youth-sized hockey stick that originally held a paper label, along with a pair of ice polo sticks including an example with a Spalding ink stamp that dates the desirable club from approx 1900 to 1904.
There are a few surface lines on the photo, with the photographer “Smith-Curry Studio” listed over the bottom right. The youth-sized hockey stick is 36” in length and sports “No. 1077” over the lower shaft, with heavy wear to the blade and a spot visible where there was once original tape over the heel section. The Spalding ice polo stick is approx 33” before the shaft starts to curve at the blade, with light wear including some chipping to the blade. The final ice polo stick is approx 35” before the shaft starts to curve at the blade, with just minimal wear and no maker’s marks present.
