Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
Longtime hockey sponsors going back to the earlier part of the 20th century, Sweet Caporal is well known to collectors for the premiums and cards produced including the 1910-11 Sweet Caporal hockey postcard set and 1934-35 Sweet Caporal hockey pictures that were available in Forum programs. Later branching out into sponsoring MLG and Forum calendars throughout the 1950s/60s, the name is also synonymous with dead-ball era baseball enthusiasts, with the company one of the most prolific advertisers within the famous T206 baseball card set. We have a circa-1930s banner from the iconic cigarette company, with this example likely seeing original placement within a sporting venue. At a large and commanding 34” x 60” and constructed of thin canvas, the company’s familiar oval logo in solid white with black shadow and red background has been used, along with a green border and trim. Seeing heavy use in its day, there is considerable wear to the material including scuffs, stains and colour loss, with this most prominently found along the center and each end, with pinholes and the thinning of the material in spots also visible.
