Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Immortalized on the silver screen by Martin Scorsese and wonderfully portrayed by Robert De Niro, Jake LaMotta was born in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, and first learned to box while in a reformatory in upstate New York. Between 1941 and 1954, the Raging Bull would compete in over 100 bouts, and would be knocked down only a single time, by Danny Nardico, on New Year’s Eve, 1952. Originating just shy of two years after his final fight in 1954, we have a check signed by the boxing legend, with this example encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA. At just over 3” x 8” and drawn on LaMotta’s Skybrite Inc account at the Bank of Miami Beach, the former middleweight champion has signed in blue ballpoint, with the check’s particulars in darker black ink. With just light expected handling wear to the check, the signature displays nicely with no encroachments, with cancellation stamps appearing over the reverse.
