Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
A colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War before being confirmed a brevet brigadier general by the US Senate, lawyer Benjamin Harrison later served as the 23rd president of the United States from 1889 to 1893, with his grandfather William Henry Harrison serving as the country’s ninth. We have a signed check from the Republican, with this specimen encapsulated and the signature graded NM-MT 8 by PSA/DNA. At 3” x 7 ¾” and drawn on his Fletcher and Sharpes bank account, the June 21st 1875 payment of $65.00 has been endorsed over the reverse by the payee, with Harrison’s fountain pen signature remaining quite dark, with no encroachments to the scripting. The check itself shows only the lightest amount of toning – rare for ephemera from the era, with a single tear along the center that doesn’t affect the signature and is only slightly visible over the front. Also included, we have a copy of the evening edition of the New York Sun from Tues, March 5, 1889, with the front page profiling the inauguration of Harrison, with wood cut images of the president and Mrs. Harrison. At 17 ½” x 22”, heavy expected toning is present on the newsprint, with chipping and material loss along the left border with small holes visible as the paper appears to have been previously bound.
