Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

Quite possibly the only surviving example, we have an exceedingly scarce 1939-40 (1940-41) O-Pee-Chee hockey card store vendor dispensing box, with this the only specimen we have ever encountered. With the V301-1 and V301-2 sets likely produced to compete with the growing popularity of the Beehive photo premiums issued by the St Lawrence Starch Company, and even possibly due to war restrictions on materials, according to research executed by a number of collectors, these cards were displayed unwrapped, stacked in a dispensing box like the offered example, and on display behind the retail counter. Customers paid one cent plus a wrapper from another O-Pee-Chee product, receiving one card in return, the next present within the box, with the choice of player not offered. At 4” x 5 ½” for the cardboard box itself and with the extended section including the top flap showing a total length of 9 ½”, red text states “Hockey Star Pictures”, with additional vending instructions on the reverse, along with “O-Pee-Chee Hockey Star”.
The text over the reverse explains how to distribute the cards, mentioning “DO NOT LET the children go through them”. Held together at the sides with the original butcher’s style paper tape, the box retains its shape, with a few faint blemishes over the front along with a small stain along the bottom. Also included, we have George Mantha's card from the V301-1 set, with corner wear and toning, along with a faint crease across the middle and a small additional crease over the bottom left corner.
