Clarence S. Campbell Bowl trophy was presented to fan favorite Garry Howatt after the Islanders won their first major team trophy in 1977-78. From their humble beginnings with 12 wins in their 1972-73 inaugural season, the Isles rose to the top of the Campbell Conference five years later with 48 wins and 111 points. Silver-plated cup with handles on both sides and a removable lid sits atop a six-sided wooden base that stands 3” high. “New York Islanders 1977-1978 Garry Howatt” is engraved on one side of the silver-plated lidded bowl, which has “Clarence S. Campbell Bowl 1968” engraved on the other side. Beautifully preserved, it comes with Garry Howatt’s signed LOA.
Howatt led the Islanders with 146 penalty minutes in 61 games in 1977-78, when he had seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points. He had 62 PIMs and one assist in New York’s seven-game playoff series loss to Toronto.
The Campbell Bowl trophies presented by the NHL in 1977-78 did not come with felt under the base that season. The green felt circles on the bottom of Howatt’s trophy were added later.
