Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
Desirable items originating from the families of 1910-era Hall of Fame hockey players are practically non-existent, with player’s signatures from the era even rarer. This lot contains an actual postcard signed by Jack Darragh, along with a second postcard, and four additional small photos. The signed postcard has a 1921 postmark and was sent from Vancouver to Ottawa, fully administered in pencil, with the scripting remaining fairly dark. It states in full, “Having wonderful weather here + having plenty of outings. Everybody fine and hope to get away from here this week”, signed simply “Jack”. The additional postcard (along with one of the photos) pictures Darragh aboard a ship, with Tommy Gorman (Senators team manager) in the photo, and Alf Smith (coached Ottawa in 1918-19) visible in each. The additional photos include Darragh’s funeral procession in 1924, along with a pair of unique images picturing the legendary star.
The postcards both exhibit expected wear but no obtrusive damage, with a crease over the lower left corner on the non-signed example. The snapshot from Jack’s funeral procession is 3” x 4 ½”, with a bit of creasing and toning, with an ink notation over the reverse, while the two shots (3 ¼” x 4 ¼”) that show an individual Darragh (one driving a delivery truck, the other, posed with a camera) both exhibit light to moderate wear with ink notations over each reverse.
