Awesome Michigan Stags game-worn alternate captain’s jersey is from the ill-fated team’s only season in the World Hockey Association. The “A” is sewn on the left breast of this No. 18 Stags jersey from the 1974-75 season that was worn by left wing Gary Veneruzzo, who spanned the entire arc of the franchise since it began play as the Los Angeles Sharks in the WHA’s inaugural campaign two years earlier and was there for the end in Baltimore after the Stags folded during their only season. Wilson size 48 tagging is in the back of the black and red knit collar of this durene beauty that features a spectacular Stags crest on the front and displays some nice game wear, including a team repair on the left sleeve.
“Veneruzzo” is spelled out in individual black twill surname letters sewn on the nameplate, which is the same durene fabric as the jersey. The garter-style fight strap remains inside the back. Numbers on the back and both sleeves are red, white and black triple twill. There is a team repair on the upper black stripe on the left sleeve, which has a small unrepaired burn hole in the middle black stripe. The lower left sleeve has board burns and some faint but obvious red and blue paint transfer. More game wear includes a black mark on the left side of the Stags crest on the front, black marks on the front and tail, some blue paint transfer below the crest and on the front hem, red paint transfer on the lower right sleeve near the cuff, blue paint transfer on the left rear tail, a spot of red paint transfer on the left shoulder, some small reddish-brown stains to the left of the number “1” on the right sleeve. There is a dark brown spot stain low on the left sleeve. The inside of the jersey displays pilling on the elbow gussets and a few reddish-brown stains to the left of the red-thread sewing outline of the upper portion of the “8” on the back.
Veneruzzo led Michigan/Baltimore with 33 goals and 60 points in 77 games in 1974-75. He also played for Cincinnati, Phoenix and San Diego and totaled 151 goals and 123 assists for 274 points in 348 WHA games, plus five goals in 18 Avco Cup playoff games. He played a total of seven NHL games with the St. Louis Blues prior to jumping to the WHA Sharks. He had a goal and an assist in five games in 1967-68, and no points in two more games for the Blues in 1971-72.
