Renamed the Toronto Toros in the summer of 1973 after serving a single season as the Ottawa Nationals, the Toronto WHA franchise existed for a trio of seasons before a drop in attendance forced the club to relocate to Birmingham for the 1976-77 WHA season. This Toros jersey was worn by Tom Simpson in 1974-75, and it’s worth noting that Simpson was the first Toronto player (WHA or NHL) in history to score 50-plus goals in a season, accomplishing the feat the very season this sweater was worn. A Maska label is affixed to the collar, with the vintage durene sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 48. Featuring a gorgeous team crest with embroidered detailing, “12” appears over the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with additional embroidered “Toros” patches over each lower sleeve. Seeing action on the back of the city’s first 50-goal man, this historic Toronto garment is ready for prominent placement within any elite grouping.
Exhibiting a few small and inconsequential stains near the team crest, the sweater shows nice game use, with small holes over each sleeve along with larger examples near the left elbow. There are also numerous fabric pulls to the material throughout, with some loss to the threading along edges of the reverse numbers. The nameplate is also loose/detached in a few small areas.
