The San Diego Mariners were the last stop for the original WHA franchise that began play as the New York Raiders in the rebel league’s inaugural season. They became the New York Golden Blades and then became the Jersey Knights the following season before moving clear across the continent for their last three seasons. This No. 27 Mariners game-worn jersey with the “Skating Skipper” patch on the shoulder and Rawlings size 46 tagging in the back of its tie-neck collar is attributed to Norm Cournoyer, who played 19 games for San Diego in 1976-77, the team’s final WHA campaign. There is evidence of a former nameplate and the Mariners were notorious for re-using and re-attaching nameplates.
“Mariners” is spelled out in sewn-on individual blue and orange double twill letters cascading down the front, and No. 27 in the same material is sewn on the back and both sleeves. There is a small board burn on the left shoulder, a loose frayed thread on the front left side of the collar, and pilling in the middle of the blue stripe all around each shoulder from the rise created by the yoke seam inside the jersey.
Cournoyer had one goal and two assists with San Diego in 1976-77. He had 10 points in 32 games in the WHA, including eight points (three goals, five assists) in 13 games with the Cleveland Crusaders in 1973-74.
