Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019

Edmonton’s entry in the World Hockey Association began play as the Alberta Oilers in the rebel league’s inaugural season. Alberta won 7-4 at the Ottawa Nationals in the WHA’s first game on Oct. 11, 1972. The team went 38-37-3 in 1972-73, the only season they played as the Alberta Oilers before switching to the city’s name. Original Oilers defenseman Ken Baird’s amzing 1972-73 game-worn jersey features a spectacular team crest on the front that displays colorful chain-stitching in the orange of the oil drop and blue of the stylized team name. More eye-popping orange chain stitching is featured in the intricate surname letters, each outlined in blue thread on the white cotton fabric nameplate on the back.
There are three team repairs on the “1” on the back and four team repairs to the “9”. The orange and blue twill of the No. 19 sewn on the back are a bit faded, as is the blue of the blue and white double twill numbers on the shoulders. There is blue paint transfer on the left front and the right rear near the hip, and a team repair on the left sleeve and another on the orange stripe on the left front tail. The "Western Athletic Supply" tagging is gone from the hem and there are several tiny reddish-brown spots stains on the front.
