Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019

A standout with the Hartford Whalers in the early-1980s, registering over a-point-a-game throughout his five seasons with the club, Blaine Stoughton had previously seen action in both the NHL and WHA, which included seasons in the latter with Cincinnati, Indianapolis and New England. From his inaugural WHA season and first of two in Cincinnati, we have a rare and highly desirable Stingers jersey worn by the Gilbert Plains native, in 1976-77. A mostly detached Rawlings label with "48" sizing sits along the collar, with no other tagging present. Featuring a black, white and gold tackle twill Stingers team crest, “17” appears over the sleeves and verso in matching material, along with “Stoughton” across the affixed nameplate. A small loop-style fight strap has also been utilized, and we should note evidence of a former nameplate. Stoughton would record 104 points in 1976-77, with his 52 goals enough to place fourth for the season.
Game use on the vintage durene includes stick marks and small holes over the lower front, with a few additional dark marks over each sleeve along with fabric pulls. There is also some minor puckering to the team crest, with a small cut over the reverse hem near a minimal amount of blue paint transfer, with pilling over the front collar. We should also note that the image shown on this listing seem to be showing the long puckering fold in the bottom of the team crest and the repair at the junction of the front band, but the resolution is not high enough on the photo to call a definitive photo-match.
