Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Ultra-intriguing and downright rare is this odd-sized card depicting the legendary King Clancy and part of the Stoodleigh Sports Series, until a few years ago an undocumented issue. The Hockey Stars set is now known to consist of eight cards, available back in the day through Stoodleigh's Restaurants, with one located near Toronto's Mutual Street Arena, the Maple Leafs' home before Maple Leafs Gardens. Printed on thick card stock and featuring the artwork of artist Jimmy Thompson, the cards measure just under two inches wide and five inches tall. This Clancy example, graded GOOD+ 2.5 is, get this, just the second of any player ever slabbed by PSA. A PSA Howie Morenz is a POOR 1. The text tells the entertaining story of Clancy taking part in a long distance running race ten years prior, while the reverse includes a partial schedule of Leafs' home games and a Stoodleigh ad. Fascinating find awaits its new appreciative home.
A nifty little bonus is a Stoodleigh Restaurants matchbook cover with scrapbook paper on the interior.
