Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
A chance to score not one but both versions of Ty Cobb’s scarce and infrequently offered (Canadian) Neilson’s Chocolate issues from 1922 is offered (in separate auctions) this time around, with a 1922 Type II example on the block here. The Type II cards are not numbered on the front, while “Neilson’s BIG LEAGUE BARS” on the back appears in a different font than the Type I issue. The back is an issue with this PSA FR 1.5 card; a red stain near the upper right corner, (when the card is held horizontally), is joined just below it by paper loss which negates the “120”, the number of “photographs in this series”, while two horizontal creases are observed on the front. PSA numbers confirm this issue’s scarcity, with but 18 Cobb Type II’s encapsulated in the history of the company. This Pop 5 joins six ahead of it and seven PR 1s. Cobb’s numbers in 1922 meanwhile included a .401 batting average, the hit machine’s third and final .400-plus season. Oh Canada, Oh Ty!
